The aircraft cabin is a unique enclosed space. In the event of fire while in-flight, evacuation is not possible. We advise all passengers to not use fire, including smoking, to ensure flight safety.
Accidents in the bathroom are especially difficult to detect from the outside. Since a number of flammable items, such as paper and other amenities are installed in the bathroom, strict fire prevention measures are required. As a part of these measures, we are required to install smoke detectors in the bathrooms. The detectors will issue an alarm to the cabin when smoke or heat is detected. In response, appropriate measures, such as emergency landing at the nearest airport, or returning to the departure airport may be taken at the pilot's discretion.
Under the Law, violations including "smoking in the bathroom" may result in the levy of a penalty of up to ¥500,000 against any offender who continues or repeats these actions after being asked to cease by the pilot.
- Q.
- Why is smoking not allowed?
- A.
- The smell and smoke caused by smoking cannot be completely contained in the enclosed space of an aircraft. Since the cabin is a public space, smoking is prohibited at all times to avoid any trouble between passengers, and to ensure a pleasant and comfortable flight. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
- Q.
- Why are ashtrays installed on the armrests of seats and in the bathroom?
- A.
- Manufactures of airplanes are required to install ashtrays on the planes. This requirement was established in the past when smoking was permitted in the cabin. Please note that Skymark Airlines does not offer these ashtrays for smoking.
- Q.
- What will happen if we smoke in the bathroom?
- A.
- Smoking in the bathroom is extremely dangerous since a number of flammable items, such as paper and other amenities are present. We also offer toilets with a suction system, which is different from normal flush toilets. If lit cigarettes are thrown into the toilet, it may cause a fire. Furthermore, smoking in the bathroom may activate the smoke detector. In such cases, we will take the appropriate measures, including making an emergency landing, which will result in considerable inconvenience for other passengers. Please do not smoke in the cabin. If you detect fire or any strange odor, please notify the cabin crew.
